I am Gisselle Alicia Guerrero (GG) and on February 14th, 2019 I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). I was in surgery the next morning to have my port placed and my first chemo. The Oncology team and child life specialist were there to explain each step of the procedures and answer our questions about the treatments I was about to endure. Those first 10 days were full of anxiety and fear in all of us. We received so much information on Leukemia and treatments, and on the 29th day of induction I had a bone marrow biopsy, which showed no more cancer cells.
Even being in remission my journey is not over. My whole treatment will be 2 years and 4 months and I have been hospitalized a few times for fevers, the flu, meningitis along with West Nile Virus. Chemotherapy and medications that go along with my treatment make me feel tired, have pain, nausea, and I still have many sleepless nights. My hair has fallen out twice; the first time in March and then again in December and I decided to be brave and shave it off. At first, I was embarrassed but not anymore!
Since my diagnosis, family, friends and the Bakersfield community have come together to support us. There has been many events around town to raise awareness: GGtheWarrior Festival, Eissler elementary BeGGBrave shirt sale, raffles and more to help with financial burdens. There was so much love and support, donations poured in and we were blessed. I knew I wanted to help other families in need like we were helped. I wanted to find a way to raise money for other kids with cancer, just like me.
GGtheWarrior is now a 501 c(3) non-profit organization raising money to give back to more kids and families fighting cancer. GGtheWarrior is a nick name that was created by my uncle, our last name in English means warrior, and my initials are GG. I am Gisselle Alicia Guerrero; I am a warrior against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Stand with me and Be GG Brave!
